Reading a slot machine like a trail map: return, risk and features

Two numbers on the info screen tell you more about a slot than its theme, its art or its name.

The short version

A slot is a random number generator wrapped in animation. Its RTP is the long-run share of stakes it returns, and its volatility describes how unevenly wins arrive. The same game can run at different RTP settings in different casinos, so read the in-game information screen before staking dollars.

Hikers check the map before the trail, not halfway up the hill. Slots deserve the same habit, yet most people just press the big button and see what happens. Everything on this page feeds into our top-rated Canadian casino sites.

Let's open the map together. Reminder: you must meet your province's gambling age, 19 in most places and 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.

What does RTP tell you, and where is it hidden?

RTP means return to player. At 96 per cent, the slot is built to hand back CAD 96 for every CAD 100 staked, averaged across a gigantic number of spins. Over one evening you might finish far above or far below that, because the average only shows up with enormous volume.

Studios often release one game in several versions, say 96 per cent and 94 per cent, and the casino chooses which to install. The actual number lives in the game's help or info menu. If you cannot find it, that is a yellow flag.

Is volatility the weather forecast?

Good comparison. Volatility is how stormy the session is likely to be. Calm games drizzle small wins frequently; stormy ones go quiet for long stretches and then pour.

WeatherWhat you seeWho it fitsWhat it does to CAD 50
LowMany small returnsShort budgets, longer eveningsDrains slowly
MediumA bit of everythingCasual playersVisible ups and downs
HighSilence, then rare joltsPeople who accept swingsCan be gone in minutes

Two slots may share a 96 per cent RTP and still feel like different planets.

What do the fancy features actually do?

Features change the rhythm, not the house edge.

 • Free spins: a round of spins awarded when scatter symbols land.
 • Cascades and multipliers: winning symbols vanish, new ones fall in, and a counter may grow.
 • Megaways-style reels: the number of symbols per reel changes each spin, so the ways to win change too.
 • Bonus buy: you pay a multiple of your bet to jump straight to the feature. Costly and not available everywhere.
 • Jackpots: a pot fed by a slice of each bet. Progressive ones grow until someone claims them.

How do slots behave under a bonus?

Slots normally count at full value towards playthrough, but some titles are excluded and a maximum bet rule often applies while bonus funds are active. Break the maximum bet once and the casino may cancel your winnings. See the rollover guide for the arithmetic.

Curious how a session might unfold? Try the RTP simulator with different bets and watch the lines wobble.

How do you turn a budget into a plan?

Say you set aside CAD 40 for the evening and bet CAD 0.50 a spin. That is 80 spins of pure budget, and at fifteen spins a minute it is over in about five minutes. Betting CAD 0.20 gives 200 spins and a calmer night. The arithmetic is humbling, and useful.

Set deposit and session limits in your account, read our guide to limits and breaks, and keep the responsible gambling page bookmarked. No pattern in past spins affects the next one.

Adults only: 19+ in most provinces, 18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. Gambling costs money and can become a problem. Keep to a budget you set in advance. We write for information only; nothing here is legal or financial advice.

Questions readers ask us

What counts as a decent RTP?

Most slots fall somewhere between 94 and 97 per cent. Higher is better for your wallet on average, but it says nothing about how bumpy the ride will be. Compare the exact figure in the help menu for each casino you consider, and weigh it alongside the volatility rating.

Do slots get hot or cold?

No. Each spin is generated independently by a random number generator, so previous results have no influence on the next outcome. A long dry spell does not mean a win is due. Be sceptical of tips, timing tricks and systems that claim to predict the next payout.

Is the jackpot I win taxed in Canada?

For recreational players, winnings are generally treated as windfalls and are not taxed. Professionals who run gambling like a business can be taxed on it. Read our note on winnings and the CRA and ask an accountant if your play is frequent or large.
